Join us at Queercircle on July 19th as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of Elias Jahshan's groundbreaking anthology, "This Arab is Queer." In collaboration with Saqi Books, we will host a captivating event that delves into Jahshan's journey of weaving together 18 underrepresented experiences of queer Arab writers.
The evening will feature three short film screenings by contributing authors from the book, followed by a thought-provoking Q&A session with Jahshan himself. The discussion will be expertly moderated by Christopher Rizkallah, allowing the audience to engage with their own questions.
This anthology is of utmost importance, as it sheds light on the struggles faced by LGBTQ+ Arabs in countries where homosexuality remains criminalized. It challenges the prevalent belief that Arab societies cannot be progressive and disrupts the media's tendency to sensationalize rather than directly engage with Arab queer voices. "This Arab is Queer" reclaims the power to tell stories on their own terms, showcasing both the complexities and the joys of queer life within the diaspora.
Copies of the anthology will be available for purchase and signing at Queercircle. The doors will open at 6:30 PM, so make sure to mark your calendars for this momentous occasion.
